Aaron Chia Hopes for Merdeka Day Glory at World Championships

Men’s doubles shuttlers Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik are eyeing a second world title and hope to deliver it for Malaysia on Merdeka Day, which falls on the same day as the World Championships final in Paris.

The pair, currently ranked world No. 2 and bronze medallists at the Tokyo Olympics, previously made history by winning Malaysia’s first-ever world title in 2022.

Aaron shared that their goal isn’t just personal, but a national one. He hopes all four Malaysian pairs competing in Paris can go far in the tournament. Alongside Aaron and Wooi Yik, the national team also includes world No. 3 Goh Sze Fei–Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, world No. 7 Man Wei Chong–Tee Kai Wun, and world No. 22 Wan Arif Junaidi–Yap Roy King.

Under the guidance of Indonesian coach Herry IP, Malaysia’s doubles squads have made significant progress and pose a strong challenge for the title.

“There’s definitely hope for a second title, but we’re taking it step by step. We want to improve our performance and remain consistent,” said Aaron.

“Every pair has a shot at becoming world champions. For us, the expectations from fans, regardless of our form, actually fuel our motivation.

“My wish is to see all four Malaysian pairs reach the semi-finals. That would give us a reason to celebrate Merdeka early. But of course, it will all come down to the seedings and the draw.”
