Giannis prioritises recovery as Bucks battle struggles and trade speculation

Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo has made it clear that his main focus is regaining full fitness and helping his team get back on track, dismissing ongoing speculation about his future.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday for the first time since an ESPN report on Dec. 3 suggested discussions between his agent and the Bucks about his long-term situation, Antetokounmpo stressed that he has not personally held any such talks with the franchise. The report surfaced on the same night he suffered a right calf strain against the Detroit Pistons, an injury that has sidelined him since.

Antetokounmpo said discussions between agents, teams and executives are part of the business and beyond his control, but he remains committed to his teammates and focused on returning healthy.

Rumours surrounding his future have intensified as Milwaukee endured a difficult stretch, entering Thursday’s game against the Toronto Raptors with an 11-16 record. The Bucks have struggled in his absence, posting a 2-8 record without him.

The two-time MVP also addressed his injury situation, explaining that his calf problem may have been linked to a rushed return from a left adductor strain last month. He believes overcompensating and playing too many games in a short span contributed to the setback.

With the Bucks facing mounting pressure this season, Antetokounmpo acknowledged that speculation has become a constant presence, even joking about how often his name appears in trade rumours. Still, he admitted that the noise has been difficult for both his family and teammates.

He revealed that he has spoken individually with players and coaches to reassure them and emphasise urgency, rather than holding any formal meeting about his future. Antetokounmpo said the team understands the situation and knows the importance of responding with improved performances on the court.

Despite previously hoping the topic would fade away, Antetokounmpo accepts that it will continue as long as the Bucks struggle. Nevertheless, he insists his attention remains on basketball, recovery and helping Milwaukee start winning again.
