Lee Chong Wei Urges Patience with Kenneth Jonassen’s Rebuilding Plan

National badminton icon Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei has called for patience as national coaching director Kenneth Jonassen works to rebuild Malaysia’s men’s singles squad.

Speaking after receiving the Darjah Gemilang Pangkuan Negeri (DGPN) in Penang, Lee emphasised that the Danish coach, who has only been in the role for under six months, needs at least a full Olympic cycle — roughly four years — to implement his plans effectively.

“He has good ideas, but we need to give him time. Just like a newborn can’t walk immediately, we can’t expect instant results,” said Lee.

He admitted the current state of the singles squad is concerning, citing the inconsistent performances of Lee Zii Jia, Ng Tze Yong, and Leong Jun Hao.

Lee also responded to former coach Wong Tat Meng’s recent concerns about a looming singles crisis, expressing hope that the backup squad can regroup and perform better at the 2026 World Junior Championships. He noted that former coach Datuk Tey Seu Bock will also assist in the youth development efforts.

Lee concluded by saying the state honour he received serves as motivation for him to continue contributing to Malaysian badminton.
