Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad believes Malaysia should consider bringing Formula 1 back to Sepang if this year’s event proves successful.

The former prime minister said the government should assess how many tourists the race attracts and how much they spend before deciding whether Malaysia should reclaim its own F1 hosting rights. He also argued that the potential tourism benefits could outweigh the cost of hosting the race.
Malaysia hosted the F1 Malaysian Grand Prix from 1999 to 2017, while F1 is set to return to Sepang this year under an arrangement with Bahrain.
Mahathir believes the upcoming race could provide valuable data on whether bringing the Malaysian Grand Prix back permanently would make economic sense.
