Mindset Key to Elevating Malaysian Badminton, Says BAM President

Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz has emphasized that player and management mindset will be key to elevating Malaysian badminton.

Speaking after meeting sports editors on Thursday, Zafrul revealed he’s been developing a long-term strategy since taking office in April. “The engagement with stakeholders has been very positive so far,” he said. “We’re working on a comprehensive plan to be shared by August, looking at the next 3-10 years.”

While acknowledging differing opinions among stakeholders, Zafrul noted their shared passion for the sport. He has consulted former players and studied successful international models, though details will be revealed in August’s proposal.

Zafrul stressed the need to first assess BAM’s current position across finances, governance, and player development before implementing changes. “We must understand where we are to determine where we want to go,” he said, adding that formal discussions with coaches and sports authorities are pending.

Recognizing Malaysia’s high badminton expectations, Zafrul said: “There’s clear room for improvement. Our goal is to align all aspects of the sport to meet these standards.”
