Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope grabbed his first-ever Champions League assist in stunning fashion, launching a 65-yard throw to set up Harvey Barnes in the Magpies’ 2-0 win over Benfica.
With Newcastle leading 1-0 in the 70th minute, Pope spotted Barnes in space and delivered an inch-perfect throw beyond the halfway line. Barnes took one bounce before driving into the box and firing low into the bottom corner.
Teammates sprinted to celebrate with Pope after the incredible play, as fans online hailed the “goalkeeper masterclass.” One wrote: “Harvey Barnes showing off, but Nick Pope deserves a medal for that assist.”
