Red Bull are still searching for their first victory of the 2026 F1 season, but the team has one major advantage that could help Max Verstappen finally break through: its new Red Bull-Ford power unit.

The RB22 has struggled with aerodynamic performance, particularly a lack of rear stability and insufficient downforce. Red Bull has made several changes to the car, but race pace remains a weakness.
However, the new power unit has emerged as one of the strongest engines of the 2026 generation. Its performance has even allowed Red Bull to run more downforce at certain circuits, using engine power to compensate for aerodynamic limitations.
Verstappen came closest to ending the drought in Austria, finishing just over 1.5 seconds behind winner George Russell. With the RB22 showing signs of improvement, Red Bull could have opportunities later in the season if rivals struggle or bring fewer upgrades to certain circuits.
Still, Red Bull faces challenges, particularly around the development situation of its power unit compared with Mercedes and Ferrari. For now, Verstappen will have to make the most of Red Bull’s engine advantage while the team continues searching for more aerodynamic performance.
