Salah Strikes Late as Egypt Edge Zimbabwe in AFCON Opener

Mohamed Salah scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to hand Egypt a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Zimbabwe in their opening match of the Africa Cup of Nations on Monday.

The seven-time champions were stunned when Zimbabwe took an early lead through Prince Dube, but Egypt dominated large spells of the contest. Their pressure finally paid off in the second half when Omar Marmoush equalised in the 64th minute, before Salah calmly finished late on to secure all three points in Group B.

It was a significant moment for the Liverpool forward, who is captaining Egypt and remains in pursuit of his first AFCON title. An eighth triumph would further extend Egypt’s record in the competition.

Egypt coach Hossam Hassan admitted his side made things harder than necessary, pointing to missed chances and the difficulty of opening matches. Despite the win, the Pharaohs were dealt a blow with midfielder Emam Ashour forced off injured, casting doubt over his availability for the rest of the tournament.

Salah’s late goal ensured a winning start for Egypt and eased early pressure as they continue their bid for continental glory.
