Thailand eyes Formula 1 race amid billion-dollar tourism push

Thailand is aiming to join Singapore as Southeast Asia’s next Formula 1 host, with Bangkok emerging as the frontrunner for a potential Grand Prix from 2028.

The plan forms part of a US$1.2 billion strategy to boost tourism through global sporting and entertainment events. Despite political uncertainty following a change in leadership, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has reaffirmed her commitment to securing the race.

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has reportedly been “impressed” by Thailand’s proposal, which includes a possible street circuit in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district — home to the city’s famous weekend market.

Thailand’s motorsport roots run deep, tracing back to Prince Birabongse Bhanudej, or Prince Bira, who competed in F1’s inaugural World Championship in 1950.

If successful, Bangkok would join the sport’s expanding global calendar, putting Thailand on the map as a new stop for the world’s fastest spectacle.
