Top seven NBA free agents still available

The NBA free-agent market has entered a quiet stretch, with no immediate deadline forcing teams or players to make decisions. For restricted free agents, pressure is likely to increase as training camp approaches in late September.

Here’s where the biggest names currently stand:

  1. Jalen Duren – The restricted free agent remains far apart from Detroit on a contract extension. The Pistons reportedly have no interest in a sign-and-trade, leaving the two sides to negotiate on salary as September approaches.
  2. James Harden – Harden opted out of his $42.3 million player option to give Cleveland more flexibility. The Cavaliers are expected to eventually re-sign him, but other roster moves could determine the structure of his new deal.
  3. Peyton Watson – Denver faces a difficult financial decision with Watson, who is seeking a significant contract after outperforming expectations last season. A sign-and-trade remains a possibility, with Atlanta, Cleveland, Milwaukee and the Clippers among teams linked to him.
  4. Jonathan Kuminga – Kuminga’s market has cooled considerably from his initial expectations. Cleveland and the Lakers remain potential destinations, but a shorter deal could allow the athletic forward to rebuild his value and return to free agency sooner.
  5. DeMar DeRozan – At 36, DeRozan is likely to wait until closer to training camp before finding his next team. Miami, Cleveland, Denver and Washington have all been mentioned as potential destinations.
  6. Bennedict Mathurin – Mathurin and the Clippers remain apart on a new contract, while the team is also open to a sign-and-trade. Detroit and New Orleans have shown interest, but a return to Los Angeles remains possible.
  7. Russell Westbrook – The veteran guard could be waiting until training camp for the right opportunity. Sacramento is open to bringing him back, potentially as a backup and mentor for rookie Darius Acuff Jr., while other teams could enter the picture if they need point-guard depth.
