VAR Controversy Denies Vietnam SEA Games Women’s Football Gold

Vietnam’s women’s football team suffered a heartbreaking end to their SEA Games title defence after losing 5-6 on penalties to the Philippines, with a controversially disallowed goal proving decisive in the final.

In the 33rd SEA Games women’s football final in Chonburi, Vietnam controlled large spells of the match. In the 29th minute, Van Su’s cross found Bich Thuy, who headed home — only for the assistant referee to flag for offside.

Replays later showed Bich Thuy was clearly onside, standing more than two metres behind the last defender, sparking outrage among fans and officials. The goal stood disallowed, and the match eventually went to penalties, where Vietnam fell short.

Coach Mai Duc Chung voiced his frustration after the match.
“We created a solid performance. The players were disciplined and deserved that goal. It was a legitimate goal,” he said.

“The refereeing decision affected our mentality and the rhythm of the game, but I have no criticism of my players. They can hold their heads high.”

Vietnam were denied a chance to defend their SEA Games crown in what will be remembered as one of the tournament’s most controversial finals.
