Victor Wembanyama produced a performance for the ages to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a dramatic 122–115 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder in a double-overtime Western Conference Finals opener, snapping Oklahoma City’s unbeaten postseason run.

The Thunder entered the series in dominant form after cruising through the first two rounds without a loss, but they quickly discovered a different level of resistance against a Spurs team that had already beaten them three times during the regular season. From the opening tip, San Antonio matched Oklahoma City’s intensity, forcing the game into a physically demanding battle that neither side could easily control.

As the contest stretched into overtime—and then double overtime—the Spurs leaned heavily on Wembanyama, who delivered one of the most complete playoff performances of his young career. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year finished with 41 points, 24 rebounds, and 3 blocks, playing nearly 50 minutes in the most taxing outing he has yet endured. Even as fatigue set in late, he continued to impact both ends of the floor, anchoring the Spurs’ defense while providing crucial scoring in key moments.

Oklahoma City, known for its top-ranked offense throughout the postseason, struggled to consistently break down San Antonio’s defensive schemes. While the Thunder had shown dominance and composure in earlier rounds, the Spurs’ physicality and discipline forced them into tougher possessions and extended sequences, ultimately slowing their rhythm at critical stages of the game.

The result also carried historical significance for San Antonio. The win marked the franchise’s first Conference Finals victory in 12 years, taking them back to the 2013–14 era when they last reached this stage before going on to win the NBA Championship. That season ended with a 4–1 series victory over the Miami Heat in the Finals, and this current run has revived memories of that championship standard, even as both rosters have undergone major changes since then.

Although the teams today are very different from their previous playoff battles, the matchup between the Spurs and Thunder continues to carry a familiar competitive edge. Each meeting has added another layer to their modern rivalry, and this latest encounter reinforced how evenly matched they can be when the stakes are at their highest.

With Game 1 going the distance and ending in double overtime, the Spurs now take an early series lead in what is expected to be a tightly contested Western Conference Finals.
