Cameroon in Turmoil as Sacked Coach Names Onana in Rival AFCON Squad

Cameroon football has plunged deeper into chaos after Andre Onana was sensationally included in a 28-man AFCON squad — named by Marc Brys, the coach who was officially sacked last week but insists he is still in charge.

Brys, dismissed by newly elected Fecafoot president Samuel Eto’o, released his own squad and preparation plans just ahead of Thursday’s submission deadline, defiantly naming the Manchester United goalkeeper.

The crisis stems from Brys’ appointment by the Sports Ministry, a move that Eto’o fiercely opposed, triggering a months-long power struggle that already cost Cameroon a World Cup spot and now threatens their AFCON campaign.

Fecafoot sacked Brys citing “subterfuge,” “professional failure,” and claims he encouraged players to defy the federation. They also alleged he was collaborating with “unknown individuals” inside Fecafoot.

Despite this, Brys maintains he has never been formally removed by the Ministry and continues to act as head coach.

Fecafoot, however, has appointed assistant David Pagou as interim boss — and Pagou’s official squad notably excludes Onana, instead calling up Edouard Sombang, a local keeper who hasn’t played league football in six months.

Several stars, including Bryan Mbeumo and Carlos Baleba, appear in both squads, adding to the confusion.

Players are reportedly worried about the growing instability as the AFCON deadline looms, with the government and Fecafoot currently in talks for a last-minute resolution.

For now, Andre Onana’s AFCON status depends on which authority ultimately prevails.
