Germany storm past Curacao as Japan earn late draw against Netherlands

Germany launched their World Cup campaign in emphatic fashion with a 7-1 victory over debutants Curacao, while Japan struck late to secure a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands on Sunday.

Curacao briefly made history when Livano Comenencia scored the nation’s first-ever World Cup goal, cancelling out Felix Nmecha’s early opener and giving the tournament newcomers hope.

However, Germany quickly regained control and showcased their attacking firepower, with Kai Havertz scoring twice as Julian Nagelsmann’s side cruised to a dominant win.

“It took us a few minutes to get back into the game after they equalised,” said Nagelsmann.

“I’m very satisfied with us scoring seven goals and our overall performance. A winning start is always important.”

Despite the heavy defeat, Curacao coach Dick Advocaat remained upbeat.

“It is not embarrassing to lose like that against such a team,” said the 78-year-old, whose side are making their first appearance at the World Cup.

In Arlington, Japan demonstrated their fighting spirit by coming from behind twice to deny the Netherlands victory.

Virgil van Dijk headed the Dutch in front before Keito Nakamura quickly levelled for Japan. Crysencio Summerville restored the Netherlands’ lead after the break, but Daichi Kamada rescued a point with a deflected equaliser in the 89th minute.

Elsewhere, Iran finally arrived in the United States ahead of their opening Group F match against New Zealand after months of uncertainty surrounding their participation.

The squad landed in Los Angeles from Mexico, although 15 members of their administrative and management staff were unable to travel after reportedly being denied US visas.

The day’s action also featured Ivory Coast taking on Ecuador, while Sweden prepared to face Tunisia with star forwards Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres leading their attack.
