Alex Albon commits to Williams as F1 silly season begins

Alex Albon will remain with Williams for at least another season, becoming the first major piece to fall into place as the 2026 Formula 1 silly season begins.

The short-term extension comes despite Williams enduring a difficult 2026 campaign. The team had hoped the latest regulation changes would help push it closer to the front of the grid, but its new car has instead struggled with pace, weight and development delays.

Williams team principal James Vowles has backed Albon to remain a key part of the team’s long-term rebuilding project, praising the Thai driver for his leadership since joining the team in 2022.

Albon, meanwhile, remains optimistic that Williams can turn its fortunes around despite the disappointing season.

“One tough year doesn’t tell the full picture, and it only gives me more motivation to keep building and pushing together with the factory and our fans to achieve great things,” Albon said.

The 30-year-old added that the team’s story is “not over yet” and that his focus is on helping Williams climb back up the order.

Albon’s decision also gives him flexibility heading into next year’s driver market, particularly with several teams potentially having vacancies. Max Verstappen’s future had been one of the biggest factors expected to shape the silly season, but the Red Bull driver now appears increasingly likely to remain with the team.

The extension is also significant for Williams, where Albon has become the most experienced driver in the team’s history. He surpassed Nigel Mansell’s 95 starts for Williams earlier this season and reached his 100th Grand Prix start for the team at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

While Albon’s future is settled for now, teammate Carlos Sainz remains out of contract. The Spaniard has been more critical of Williams’ struggles this season but is reportedly in exclusive talks with the team over a one-year extension.

With Albon staying and Sainz’s future still unresolved, Williams could become one of the key teams to watch as the 2027 driver market begins to take shape.
