Alexander Isak faced a hostile reception on his return to Newcastle as Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw at St James’ Park.
The Swedish striker was booed throughout the match and subjected to chants from the home supporters following his £125 million move to Liverpool last year.
Isak struggled to make an impact, missing chances and failing to find his rhythm, but Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola said the forward had expected the reception and continued to work hard despite the pressure.
Newcastle took the lead through Anthony Elanga before Cody Gakpo levelled shortly after half-time. Joe Willock then restored the hosts’ advantage, only for Dominik Szoboszlai to rescue a point for Liverpool with a stoppage-time penalty.
Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle was frustrated by the late penalty, calling the decision “soft”, but was pleased with his side’s performance against the defending Premier League champions.
For Iraola, the late equaliser provided some relief, although Liverpool’s defensive weaknesses remained a concern as the new manager began his tenure with a draw.
