Lee Zii Jia will need to raise his level if he hopes to progress further at the Hylo Open, with Japan’s world championships silver medallist Kodai Naraoka awaiting him in the second round.

The Malaysian independent shuttler survived a challenging opening match against Singapore’s Jason Teh, winning 21-16, 19-21, 21-17 in 59 minutes. Despite taking the first game, Zii Jia struggled to maintain his momentum and was forced into a deciding game before sealing the victory.
The win came after Zii Jia reached the semi-finals of the Arctic Open earlier this month, offering encouragement that he is gradually rediscovering his form. However, he cannot afford another dip in performance against Naraoka, known for his consistency and ability to extend rallies.
Their head-to-head record stands at 3-3, although their most recent meeting was in the 2024 Australian Open final, where Zii Jia emerged victorious. Another win would be a significant confidence boost as he continues his comeback.
