Australia are determined to defy expectations when they face Turkey in their opening Group D match at the World Cup in Vancouver on Saturday, according to coach Tony Popovic.

Turkey head into the clash as favourites, boasting exciting young talents such as Arda Guler and Kenan Yildiz, who are expected to be among the tournament’s standout performers.
However, Popovic believes the Socceroos are used to being underestimated and are ready to prove their critics wrong.
“We understand that not many people are expecting much from us outside of our own supporters, media, team and staff. But we’re accustomed to that,” said Popovic.
“We’re confident that we can show some great football and demonstrate what Australian football can do.”
Australia have become regular World Cup participants, qualifying for six consecutive tournaments and reaching the Round of 16 in Qatar 2022 before losing to eventual champions Argentina.
With co-hosts the United States and Paraguay also in Group D, Popovic knows a positive start could be crucial to Australia’s hopes of progressing.
“We know we have a big challenge against a formidable opponent, but it’s the World Cup and we’re ready,” he said. “They expect to win, but so do most people. Our job is to try and spoil the party.”
The Australian coach also confirmed his squad is fully fit, easing concerns over striker Mohamed Toure after he missed training earlier in the week due to illness.
The 22-year-old Norwich City forward is one of Australia’s brightest young prospects and is expected to play a key role as the Socceroos look to make a strong statement on the world stage.
