Cadillac is closing in on naming their first Formula 1 driver ahead of their highly anticipated 2026 debut, with a number of former F1 talents and overlooked reserves vying for what may be their final shot in the sport.

Team Principal Graeme Lowdon recently stated the team won’t be pursuing currently active drivers, opening the door for sidelined veterans. One of the front-runners is Valtteri Bottas, the experienced ex-Mercedes driver, who is reportedly close to signing with the American outfit. Bottas, currently out of a race seat, fits Cadillac’s criteria: highly experienced, respected in the paddock, and immediately available.
Mick Schumacher, another name in the mix, has confirmed he’s in active discussions with Cadillac. The 2020 Formula 2 champion, who last raced in F1 with Haas in 2022, described the talks as “very positive” and believes he’s in a “great position.” Since his F1 exit, Schumacher has served as a reserve for Mercedes and raced in the World Endurance Championship with Alpine.
However, Schumacher’s possible return has split opinion among fans. When Motorsport-Total’s report was shared on Reddit, many reacted negatively, citing his underwhelming F1 record and lack of recent race action. Critics claim he is only still being considered due to his legendary surname — being the son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher.
Comments ranged from skepticism — “Why?” and “Waste of a seat” — to outright frustration: “I’d be extremely disappointed if Mick gets that seat.” Some fans viewed it as a backward step, with others suggesting the team needs a more exciting or deserving pick.
Despite the public backlash, Lowdon has spoken favorably of Schumacher. He praised the German’s attitude and interest in Cadillac’s project, saying they “like him very much.” Schumacher’s F1 experience and current testing background could make him a suitable fit — perhaps more as a development or reserve driver rather than a main seat holder.
Cadillac’s final driver lineup remains undecided, but the shortlist is narrowing. Alongside Bottas and Schumacher, Jack Doohan is also under consideration, with his father recently meeting team representatives at Silverstone.
The first official announcement is expected soon, and whoever gets the nod will be at the forefront of one of F1’s most ambitious new projects.
