Japan captain Wataru Endo has been forced to withdraw from the 2026 FIFA World Cup squad due to injury and has announced his retirement from international football. The Liverpool midfielder’s absence is a major blow for Japan, who lose one of their most experienced leaders before the tournament.

The 33-year-old had been battling an injury setback and, despite efforts to recover in time, was unable to reach full fitness. Endo was replaced in Japan’s squad by Borussia Mönchengladbach forward Shuto Machino.
In his farewell message, Endo expressed disappointment at missing the World Cup but said he had no regrets after doing everything possible to return. He reflected proudly on Japan’s progress since the 2022 World Cup and said he would continue supporting the national team as a fan.
Endo leaves international football after years as a key figure for the Samurai Blue. Since becoming captain, he has helped guide Japan through a period of growth and increased expectations on the global stage. His leadership, defensive ability, and work ethic made him one of the team’s most important players.
Japan will now prepare for their World Cup campaign without their captain, beginning with a Group F clash against the Netherlands.
