Curacao goalkeeper Eloy Room produced one of the greatest goalkeeping displays in World Cup history to help his country secure its first-ever point at the tournament with a memorable 0-0 draw against Ecuador.

The 37-year-old made an astonishing 15 saves in Kansas City, setting a new record for the most saves in a 90-minute World Cup match. His heroic performance ensured the smallest nation ever to qualify for the tournament, with a population of around 156,000, earned a historic result on football’s biggest stage.

Room signalled his intentions almost immediately, making a superb close-range stop from Ecuador captain Enner Valencia just two minutes into the contest. It proved to be the first of many crucial interventions as Ecuador relentlessly pushed for a breakthrough.

The veteran goalkeeper denied several high-quality chances throughout the match, including a powerful effort from John Yeboah before halftime and another dangerous Valencia header after the break. Time and again, Room stood firm as Ecuador finished the match with 28 attempts on goal.

Only former United States goalkeeper Tim Howard has recorded more saves in a World Cup match, making 16 during an extra-time defeat to Belgium in 2014. Room’s achievement, however, came entirely within the regulation 90 minutes.

Despite the individual accolades, Room preferred to focus on the collective effort.

“I wasn’t thinking about the record during the game,” he said afterwards, joking that he was slightly disappointed not to equal Howard’s mark. Instead, he credited his teammates for helping Curacao earn a point that keeps their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.

The performance carried extra significance for Room, who has long dreamed of representing Curacao at a World Cup. Born in the Netherlands and eligible through his father, he chose to represent the Caribbean nation after being approached by former coach Patrick Kluivert in 2015.

His display quickly captured worldwide attention. Room’s social media following reportedly surged from under 100,000 followers to around 700,000 following the match, highlighting the global impact of his heroics.

The occasion was made even more special by the presence of Dutch royalty. Netherlands King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima attended the match and joined Curacao’s celebrations afterwards. Room revealed that the royal family congratulated the team, with Queen Maxima even giving him a kiss after the final whistle.

For Curacao, the draw represented another remarkable chapter in their football story. After suffering a heavy 7-1 defeat to Germany in their World Cup debut, many feared the tournament would become a difficult experience. Instead, thanks largely to Room’s unforgettable display, they have now written their names into World Cup history.

As one jubilant Curacao journalist shouted after the final whistle: “Curacao! We got a point! This is history!”
