‘I’ve Got You, Dad!’ — A Son Fulfils His Father’s World Championship Dream

More than four decades after a promising badminton career was cut short by injury, Malvin Alcala finally saw his lifelong dream come true through his son, Mark Shelley Alcala, who made his BWF World Championships debut in New Delhi.

Malvin had once dreamed of representing the Philippines at the World Championships and the Olympics, but a serious back injury in the early 1990s forced him to abandon his ambitions as a player. Rather than letting the dream disappear, he made it his mission to see his children achieve what he could not.

“This is my dream because it’s my dad’s dream,” Malvin said. “He got injured when he was a player, and he wasn’t able to achieve this dream. So he motivated me.

I’ve got you, dad!

Malvin only discovered badminton at the age of 15 after initially playing basketball. Coming from a modest family, he quickly fell in love with the sport and began winning tournaments just a year after picking it up.

His promising playing career, however, was brought to an abrupt end after he suffered a serious back injury that eventually required surgery.

Determined to keep his badminton dream alive, Malvin channelled his passion into raising his children around the sport. Even their names carried a special connection to his ambitions.

His daughter was named Malvinne, after himself, so that hearing her name announced at tournaments would feel as though his own name was still being called on court. His son Mark Shelley also carries part of his mother’s name, Shirley, reflecting the role both parents played in the family’s journey.

Both children eventually became international badminton players, with Malvinne representing the Philippines for several years.

A decade ago, the family moved to the United States in continued pursuit of their badminton ambitions. Malvin now works as a technical director at a badminton academy, helping develop the next generation of players.

Mark Shelley has represented the United States for nearly a decade, and on Tuesday, the family’s long-awaited moment finally arrived.

Taking the court at the World Championships against Pan American badminton great Kevin Cordon, Mark made his debut on the sport’s biggest stage — completing a dream that began with his father’s unfinished career more than 40 years ago.
