Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, who joined Ferrari in 2025 on what was initially reported as a three-year deal, may have more control over his future than previously thought.

Following a difficult outing at the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix—where he failed to reach Q3 and teammate Charles Leclerc claimed pole—Hamilton expressed frustration, saying the team might be better served replacing him. While Ferrari has shown no sign of considering such a move, a report from Gazzetta dello Sport claims his contract is structured as a two-year deal with an option for a third, activated solely at Hamilton’s discretion.
This arrangement means Hamilton could choose to leave after the 2026 season, a reversal of the “2+1” deal Mercedes offered him previously, where the extra year was the team’s choice. The clause could prove pivotal with the introduction of new car regulations and engines in 2026. If Ferrari adapts well, Hamilton could push for his record-breaking eighth title—but if the team struggles, he would be free to explore other opportunities.
