Portugal coach Roberto Martinez insists his squad remains calm, focused and more united than ever ahead of their crucial World Cup Group K clash against Uzbekistan, despite facing criticism following a disappointing 1-1 draw with DR Congo in their tournament opener.

Portugal dominated possession in their opening match but struggled to convert control into clear chances, managing just seven shots and only one effort on target — João Neves’ early header that found the net in the sixth minute.
Reflecting on the performance, Martinez admitted his side lost their organisation after a strong start but believes lessons have been learned ahead of Tuesday’s encounter.
“We are strong and focused,” Martinez told reporters. “Our group is even more united than before. This is a process and tension is not part of our team.”
The former Belgium coach acknowledged the criticism that followed the draw but stressed that it has not affected preparations.
“It is normal to receive criticism after a poor result,” he said. “Sometimes it can be unfair or overly negative, but it doesn’t influence how we prepare. We remain fully focused on improving.”
Martinez revealed that all players are available for selection except defender Tomas Araujo, while centre-back Ruben Dias is back in contention after missing the opening match.
The Portuguese boss also defended captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who came under scrutiny after a quiet performance against DR Congo, with some pundits suggesting the veteran striker should be dropped.
Martinez, however, believes Ronaldo remains a vital part of the team.
“We are a side that wants to dominate possession, defend aggressively and transition quickly,” he explained. “To do that, you need players who create space with intelligent movement, and Cristiano is one of the best in the world at that.”
The coach also praised Ronaldo’s commitment and leadership.
“He has represented his country for many years and still wants to improve and help the team. He is a role model for everyone in this squad.”
With Colombia having opened their campaign with a 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan to take control of Group K, Martinez knows a win is essential if Portugal are to keep pace in the race for qualification.
“The disappointment from the first game is something we all share,” he said. “But I feel confident that tomorrow we will see a Portugal team capable of performing at a high level for the full 90 minutes.”
Portugal enter the match knowing that three points would put them firmly back on track for a place in the knockout rounds, while another slip-up could leave their World Cup hopes under pressure heading into the final group game.
