Rockets Eye Historic Multi-Team Trade in Kevin Durant Deal Expansion

The Houston Rockets sent shockwaves through the NBA when they initiated a trade for superstar Kevin Durant ahead of the NBA Draft. While the core of the deal is in place, it has not yet been finalized—opening the door for an even more ambitious move that could rewrite the league’s history books.

According to NBA insider and The Athletic writer Fred Katz, both the Rockets and Phoenix Suns are currently exploring ways to expand the deal into a massive, multi-team trade that could involve a record-setting seven franchises.

“League sources tell The Athletic that the Rockets and Suns are working on expanding the Kevin Durant trade into a deal that would involve a league-record seven teams. Other teams involved in negotiations at the moment include the Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, and Minnesota Timberwolves,” Katz reported. “No trade is imminent, and details are being ironed out as of Wednesday night.”

If completed, the deal would surpass last summer’s six-team trade that sent Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks, currently the largest trade in NBA history. That trade itself overtook the previous high-mark set by the five-team deal that saw Russell Westbrook land with the Washington Wizards.

While specific details of the expanded trade are still developing, the involvement of major franchises like the Lakers, Warriors, and Timberwolves suggests a potentially seismic shakeup across the league. With the Rockets already making bold moves in the offseason, a finalized Durant deal—especially one of this scale—could reshape the balance of power in both conferences.
