Argentina midfielder Rodrigo De Paul has urged fans to enjoy every moment of Lionel Messi’s international career instead of focusing on when it might end, as the reigning world champions prepare for their World Cup Round of 32 clash against tournament debutants Cape Verde.

With Messi, 39, potentially featuring in his final World Cup for Argentina, speculation continues to grow over the legendary forward’s future. However, De Paul believes supporters should simply appreciate the opportunity to watch him play.

“For me, the main thing is to enjoy Leo Messi every single day, just as every Argentinian does,” De Paul said.

“We always value things more once they’re gone—that’s part of life. Right now, we’re all enjoying having him with us.”

Messi has once again led Argentina’s charge at the World Cup, topping the scoring charts with six goals in three matches, including a hat-trick in the team’s opening victory over Algeria.

Often dubbed “Messi’s bodyguard” by fans for the way he protects his captain on the pitch, De Paul also spoke warmly about their close friendship, which has continued since they became teammates at Inter Miami.

“It means a lot to be a good friend of Lionel Messi. Friendship is one of the most important things we have in life. I feel very lucky to share moments with him both on and off the pitch, and that makes me really proud.”

Argentina taking Cape Verde seriously

Although many expected Argentina to face a traditional football powerhouse in the knockout rounds, Cape Verde’s impressive group-stage campaign has earned the African nation a historic meeting with the defending champions.

De Paul admitted the matchup came as a surprise but insisted Argentina will not underestimate their opponents.

“When the draw was made, we thought we might face a former World Cup winner or another top national team. But Cape Verde have played very well throughout the group stage.”

“We have to approach this match with great responsibility because it’s a very important game for us.”

His caution echoed head coach Lionel Scaloni’s message, with Argentina determined to avoid any complacency against one of the tournament’s surprise packages.

Experience key in knockout football

Having been a regular under Scaloni for nearly eight years, De Paul acknowledged Argentina’s experience in major knockout matches but stressed that every World Cup encounter brings its own unique pressure.

“We’ve played these kinds of matches before, but every game is different. The emotions are always very strong, and you never know how they’ll affect you.”

“Experience helps you manage those feelings better, but at the end of the day they’re still emotions, and you have to respect them.”

Argentina will look to use that experience as they continue their title defence against a confident Cape Verde side aiming to produce another World Cup upset.
