Millwall Chase “Fairytale” Return as Championship Play-Off Race Begins

Millwall F.C. head into the English Championship play-offs full of belief as they chase what they are calling a “fairytale” return to the Premier League after more than three decades away from the top division. They finished third in the regular season, missing automatic promotion by a single point, and now turn their focus to the high-stakes semi-finals.

Their opponents are Hull City A.F.C., who secured sixth place and arrive as one of the surprise packages of the season. Hull were fighting relegation just a year ago but have managed a strong turnaround to reach the play-offs and keep their promotion hopes alive.

In the other semi-final, Southampton F.C. face Middlesbrough F.C.. Southampton are seen as favourites after a remarkable late-season surge that included a long unbeaten run and a dramatic rise from mid-table to the top six. Their momentum has made them one of the most dangerous sides in the competition.

Middlesbrough, meanwhile, are aiming to end a nine-year absence from the Premier League, having experienced repeated play-off disappointment in recent seasons. Despite inconsistent form towards the end of the campaign, they believe the knockout format gives them a fresh opportunity.

Millwall manager Alex Neil described the season as “unbelievable” but stressed that the job is not finished, saying promotion would be the biggest achievement of his career. Across all four clubs, managers have highlighted how open the contest is, with each team believing they have a genuine chance in a format known for producing drama and unpredictability.

The play-off final at Wembley on May 23 will decide which club joins the Premier League, completing one of the most intense and closely fought campaigns in English football.
