Anwar Congratulates Zi Yu and Genevie After Historic World Junior Badminton Triumph

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has congratulated Low Zi Yu and Genevie Lim after the young badminton duo made history by winning the girls’ doubles title at the 2026 World Junior Championships in Cairo, Egypt.

Anwar praised their achievement in a social media post, describing the victory as a proud moment and a new chapter in Malaysian badminton history. He also encouraged both players to maintain their momentum and continue making the country proud on the international stage.

The second-seeded Malaysians defeated Japan’s Nijika Kamata and Shizuku Kashio 15-7, 9-15, 15-12 in the final. Their victory ended Malaysia’s 34-year wait for its first girls’ doubles crown at the championships, which began in 1992.

The triumph was especially meaningful for 16-year-old Zi Yu, who had finished runner-up in the previous two editions with different partners. Teaming up with 18-year-old Genevie finally brought her the world junior title she had been chasing.
