Arsenal’s perfect start came crashing down as Brighton stunned the defending champions with a convincing 3-0 victory on the south coast.
The Gunners had won seven straight games in all competitions and nine consecutive league matches dating back to April, but looked completely out of character as Brighton produced a disciplined and clinical display.
Mikel Arteta admitted Brighton deserved the win and believes the defeat could become a “big lesson” for his side heading into the international break.
It was also Arsenal’s heaviest Premier League defeat as reigning champions since 1989 — a result that could give their title rivals hope.
