In the ever-evolving transfer saga surrounding Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyökeres, Arsenal’s pursuit of the Swedish striker may be under serious threat — from none other than Manchester United.

Despite early optimism in North London, United’s links to Gyökeres have resurfaced. And with Rúben Amorim — Gyökeres’ former manager and a figure he greatly respects — now at the helm at Old Trafford, the Red Devils may hold a crucial advantage. While United had initially shifted focus to Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, the club’s need for a clinical No. 9 remains.
Even after splashing over £100 million on Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee in recent windows, United are still lacking a consistent, top-level finisher — and they know it.
However, according to Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, United’s striker shortlist doesn’t stop at Gyökeres. Benjamin Šeško and Nicolas Jackson are reportedly now top of their radar. Šeško, the highly-rated RB Leipzig forward, has long attracted interest from Premier League clubs including Arsenal and Liverpool.
But with Arsenal now in advanced talks for Gyökeres and Liverpool finalising a move for Hugo Ekitike, United might become Šeško’s best bet for an English switch — unless he chooses to stay put in Germany.
“There are now many movements in the background for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Šeško,” said Plettenberg.
“But I can also imagine him staying this summer if there is not the right offer.”
The transfer picture may yet get more complicated. Chelsea, despite already signing two forwards this summer, are not entirely out of the Šeško race either.
“I cannot close the door to possible Chelsea interest,” Plettenberg added.
“Let’s see what happens in the next two or three weeks.”
With multiple elite strikers in play and top clubs circling, the Premier League’s striker carousel could take a dramatic turn before the window slams shut.
