Xabi Alonso Calls Carabao Cup Chelsea’s “Least Important” Competition After Liverpool Exit

Xabi Alonso has sparked debate after describing the Carabao Cup as Chelsea’s “least important competition” following their heartbreaking fourth-round elimination against Liverpool.

Chelsea were knocked out 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Anfield. Morgan Rogers put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot before Cody Gakpo equalised, sending the tie into a shootout. Wesley Fofana then missed the decisive kick, allowing Liverpool to book their place in the quarter-finals.

Despite the disappointment, Alonso insisted his team had performed well and shown courage against Liverpool. He described the defeat as a small setback, stressing that Chelsea’s immediate priority is their upcoming Premier League clash against Manchester United.

However, his comments have raised questions about Chelsea’s ambitions this season. With the Blues now out of the Carabao Cup, their opportunity to compete for domestic silverware has narrowed, making their remaining competitions even more important.
