LAFC Criticized Over Giroud Delay, Faces Potential Fine

Former Premier League referee Keith Hackett has called for MLS side LAFC to be fined following a substitution delay involving Olivier Giroud during their 2-0 loss to Chelsea at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Giroud, set to come on at halftime, was not ready to enter the pitch due to missing his shirt, causing a several-minute delay. Referee Jesus Valenzuela Saez chose to wait instead of restarting the match, prompting complaints from Chelsea players.

Hackett criticized both the referee and LAFC, stating the match should not have been delayed and that the club should be fined for not having their player properly prepared. He added the officials need better operational guidance.

Separately, controversy also surrounded Lionel Messi, who avoided punishment for an apparent headbutt during Inter Miami’s 0-0 draw with Al-Ahly, leading to claims of preferential treatment from VAR.
