Can Marcus Rashford Revive His Career at Barcelona? Spanish Media Reacts

Marcus Rashford’s move from Manchester United to Barcelona has sparked widespread intrigue, with both English and Spanish fans eager to see whether the England forward can rediscover the form that once made him one of Europe’s most exciting young talents.

To assess the mood in Spain, BBC Sport spoke to three Barcelona-based journalists: Jamie Easton Gombau (La Liga TV), Toni Padilla (Ara), and Jordi Pons (Spanish TV commentator), who offered their insight on what Rashford’s arrival means for the Catalan giants.

Where does Rashford fit in?

Barcelona’s forward line is already packed with talent. Robert Lewandowski, Lamine Yamal, and Raphinha all enjoyed strong seasons, while Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres offer depth. Still, Rashford brings something different.

Jamie Easton Gombau:
“Rashford is a wildcard. Barca wanted a winger to ease the load on Yamal and Raphinha, and also considered playing Raphinha centrally. Rashford can also operate as a false nine, which is key as Lewandowski gets older. He wasn’t the first choice—Luis Díaz and Nico Williams were ahead—but he was the most affordable, and that matters for financially struggling Barca.”

Toni Padilla:
“Barca needed someone for the left wing who could also play centrally. Rashford fits tactically, and while he wasn’t Plan A, he’s still young enough to contribute. Let’s not forget, he’s only here because Nico Williams turned them down.”

Jordi Pons:
“Coach Hansi Flick wants more options and competition. Raphinha played almost every game last season, and Flick wants to manage workloads better. Rashford adds depth and flexibility.”

Is Rashford good enough to make an impact?

Rashford has had a rollercoaster career. Once a breakout star at Manchester United, his recent form has been inconsistent. So how is he viewed in Barcelona?

Jamie Easton Gombau:
“It all depends on which Rashford shows up. If it’s the explosive version from a few years ago, he’ll be a huge asset. If it’s the player we saw recently, especially at Villa, it might not be enough. Still, swapping Ansu Fati for Rashford feels like a win for all parties—especially if he hits double digits in goals and assists.”

Toni Padilla:
“He won’t start every game with Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Yamal around. And Olmo and Torres won’t love the added competition. But Flick wants a deep squad, and Rashford will get chances. It’s on him to prove he deserves to play the big games.”

Jordi Pons:
“I remember the young Rashford—quick, fearless, with a powerful shot. Players can lose their way, but he’s shown humility by lowering his salary for this chance. Now he has the platform to rebuild his career at one of the world’s biggest clubs.”

Rashford’s arrival in Barcelona is far from guaranteed success—but it’s a fresh start. If he can rise to the challenge, it could be the career revival both he and Barça need.
