Herry Iman Stresses Action, Not Just Awareness, in Athlete Mental Health

Recognizing mental health struggles in athletes is just the first step, says national men’s doubles coach Herry Iman Pierngadi. With over 30 years of coaching experience, Herry explains that signs like nervous expressions and disorganized gameplay are often red flags.

“When I see something’s off, I’ll speak with the player privately and then coordinate with our team psychologist,” said Herry, who is currently preparing Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, and others for the Japan and China Open later this month.

He also highlighted the growing challenge of social media, which he believes has a significant impact on young athletes’ mental well-being.

The topic gained attention after shuttler Lee Zii Jia posted disturbing illustrations on Instagram, sparking concern among fans. The 27-year-old has been recovering from injury and is on an extended break.

However, National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Jefri Ngadirin dismissed concerns, stating that Team LZJ had confirmed there was no cause for alarm.

“Maybe he’s just exploring an art style,” said Jefri. “We’re always here if support is needed, but his team sees no indication of mental distress.”
