Arsenal showed grit and character on Tyneside as late goals from Mikel Merino and Gabriel sealed a dramatic comeback win over Newcastle United.

Bukayo Saka, captaining the side in Martin Ødegaard’s absence, admitted it felt like another tough night was unfolding after a penalty was overturned and Nick Pope produced heroics in goal. But the Gunners dug deep to flip the game in the dying minutes.
“It was a big result,” Saka said. “In the past, we’ve come here and decisions have gone against us. It felt like that again today, but we showed big character and fight to turn it around. I’m really proud of the boys — we made a big statement today.”
Saka, who played 70 minutes as he continues his comeback from injury, relished celebrating the late drama with teammates and savored the chance to wear the captain’s armband:
“It’s a beautiful feeling every time I get to wear the armband, and even better when we get three points.”
